Why It’s Perfect For Long Rides
Segway is a reputable brand that scores high on any e-scooter list.
We find their ES4 model to be the most suitable option for long-distance riders, but it is essentially an electric kick scooter. For this reason, we’d like to lead off with a warning for UK buyers.
It can be a little tricky using an e-scooter on the streets under UK law unless, of course, it’s registered.
We’ve heard news that this is about to change to encourage more environmentally-friendly transportation methods for commuters, so fingers crossed things are about to change soon.
After looking for a dependable e-scooter with a more extended range than its rivals, the Segway Ninebot ES4 certainly caught our eye. Here’s a look at its specifications.

Segway Ninebot ES4 Design
Ninebot Segway ES4 is straightforward to set-up for use, but folding it isn’t a piece of cake. Unlike other e-scooters that fold away easily, you’ll need to kick the folding pedal while holding down the handlebar.
In some cases, it doesn’t work on the first go, prompting you to kick it harder in frustration. Most people are not fond of the noise it makes when you need to go harder.
Thankfully, the ease of operation makes up for it. Locating the controls is a cakewalk: brake on the left and accelerator on the right. There’s a mudguard at the rear for assistance if you need more brake power.
Charging is also straightforward. All you need to do is plug it in. It’s a lot easier to figure out just how further along you are in the process because the display shows the exact percentage instead of the usual bars found in other scooters.
One thing that we don’t like is that it doesn’t have an installed bell or horn. However, you can add one if you want.
It comes in two colours: silver or dark grey. It would have been better if they produced more varying shades.
Segway Ninebot ES4 Features
The ES4 is heavy for a reason. It’s got two batteries to gear you with on your long travels — an internal and external one. We’ll talk more about this later.
Segway is widely known for its quality, and when it comes to their scooters, you can’t doubt their expertise.
The deck has a mesh pattern designed to improve the grip, an important safety feature. Ergonomic handles are also ideal, especially when riding for prolonged hours.
Let’s talk about the wheels. The back wheels are smaller than the front wheels by half an inch. The rear tires respond to the mechanical brake, while the front tires respond to the automatic brake found on the handlebar. Unfortunately, these are the same tires they’ve used in the older models.
We’ve mentioned earlier that the battery percentage is available on display, but so are your speed and riding mode. There are three riding modes you can choose from: Eco, Standard, and Sport.
Then, there’s the silent motor which helps smoothen the ride. However, you might startle some passersby when you zoom past them. To avoid this, try installing a bell or a horn.
Segway Ninebot ES4 Performance
You can’t deny the power of ES4, with its maximum power reaching 800 watts. It’s a huge improvement from earlier models.
What about the extra battery?
To accelerate the e-scooter, press the acceleration throttle after slightly kicking it off. The initial impact will depend on the mode you choose, but it’s nothing to worry about. However, some beginners might find the thrust disorienting at the beginning.
Shifting from one mode to another is a breeze, thanks to its convenient location. Of course, you should always select one before you ride your e-scooter, but there are some instances you might need to change it up, such as going uphill. The ES4 is not made for sloping landscapes, but it has a slope grade of 15 degrees, which isn’t half bad.
But it’s the speed control that has us hooked. After travelling at the same pace for a while, the e-scooter adapts accordingly, meaning you won’t need to press on the throttle all the time. And since this e-scooter is made for long distances, the cruise control feature certainly comes in extra handy.
Segway Ninebot ES4 Battery and Connectivity
We’ve touched on the topic of battery several times because it’s the ES4’s biggest asset.
Aside from extending the rage, the batteries also charge faster than other e-scooters that provide the same range. Both batteries take roughly 7 hours to charge completely.
If you value safety, you’ll be happy to know that this e-scooter is UL 2272 certified. This means that the battery system went through various tests to ensure that the vehicle won’t blow up under any circumstances.
The Segway Ninebot’s App is first-rate. It provides instructions, advanced modes, and access to other features. You can even use it to change the LED colours under the deck!

The Verdict: Why We’re Giving It A 4.2
Segway Ninebot Kickscooter ES4 has a wider range than other e-scooters, which is why it made its way to our Top 5 e-scooters.
The external battery is very original. And while it’s a double-edged sword due to its extra weight, we find it a favourable addition.
However, the tires need to be upgraded to accommodate rough terrain. Otherwise, it’s only suitable for smooth roads.
Also, it’s a bit fussy to fold, and carrying it can be troublesome. We also think that with ES4’s price, albeit reasonable, you can get much more from other scooters.
But hey, if you have the money, why not? You’re getting an e-scooter from a reputable brand, anyway.
